Edinburgh School of Informatics Deploys Trustworthy Generative AI for NHS Pathology Laboratories

The School of Informatics at The University of Edinburgh, in collaboration with NHS Scotland, has unveiled a breakthrough clinical diagnostic assistant developed at the Bayes Centre for Data Science & AI.

The AI system, titled 'PathoGuard', analyzes high-resolution digital tissue biopsies in real time, identifying cellular anomalies and highlighting regions requiring urgent consultant review. Unlike black-box models, PathoGuard generates full provenance citations and explainability maps for every diagnostic suggestion.

"Informatics at Edinburgh has pioneered artificial intelligence research since 1963," said Professor Subir Sarkar, Chair of Medical Machine Learning. "Our responsibility is to deliver AI systems that pathologists can interrogate, verify, and trust implicitly in critical healthcare workflows."

Clinical trials across Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Western General Hospital demonstrated a 50% reduction in biopsy turnaround times.
