Edinburgh Physicists Establish Quantum Key Distribution Network Across Scottish Cities

Quantum physicists at The University of Edinburgh have completed the installation of a 140-kilometer unrepeatered quantum key distribution (QKD) network spanning central Scotland.

The infrastructure transmits quantum-entangled photons through underground commercial dark fiber cables, providing unconditional cryptographic security for financial transactions and sensitive medical records.

The network will serve as a national testbed for quantum internet protocols in partnership with the UK Quantum Communications Hub.
