Roslin Institute Scientists Gene-Edit Heat-Resistant Barley to Secure Global Grain Supplies

Scientists at The University of Edinburgh's Roslin Institute have published breakthrough results in Nature Biotechnology demonstrating drought and heat resilience in gene-edited barley and wheat cultivars.

The modified crops maintained normal photosynthesis and seed yields under simulated drought conditions that caused a 60% failure rate in standard control crops.

"Climate disruption poses severe threats to global food security," said Lead Researcher Dr. Alistair MacFarlane. "Our genetic discoveries provide agricultural breeders with proven targets to safeguard essential food crops against rising temperatures."
