The University of Edinburgh Adds a Full Incident-Response Lab to the MSc Cybersecurity

The MSc Cybersecurity at The University of Edinburgh has a new final component: a graded incident-response lab. Students are given a simulated environment, a breach in progress, and a fixed number of hours to detect it, contain it, preserve evidence, communicate with stakeholders and write a report a board could act on.

The exercise is scheduled in windows across time zones so that a student in Kigali or Addis Ababa is not running a simulated breach at 3 a.m. The scenario, the scoring rubric and the time budget are the same for everyone.

"A security master's that ends with a written exam tests whether you can describe an incident," said the module lead. "This tests whether you can run one. Those are different skills, and employers know it."

The taught programme leading into the lab covers network security and defensive architecture, identity and cryptography, offensive security and testing, governance, risk and compliance, and security policy. The incident-response lab pulls all of it together under pressure.

Students are marked on technical containment, evidence handling, decision quality under incomplete information, and communication. The board report is weighted heavily. "The most common failure we see is a student who technically resolves the incident and cannot explain to a non-technical executive what happened, what it cost, and what changes now," the module lead said.

Emeka Nwosu, a data analyst in Kampala moving into a security role, said the exercise changed how they read job descriptions. "Every posting says 'incident response experience'. Now I have run one under assessment conditions and can talk about specific decisions I made."

The programme is delivered online with zero tuition. Lab environments run on the platform. Academic integrity rules apply: the exercise is individual, monitored, and any anomaly is followed up.

Applicants need a computing background or equivalent professional experience in IT or security. A preparatory short course in networking and Linux is available before enrolment for applicants who need it.

Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours. The University of Edinburgh will not pretend a programme is light. Applicants should plan their weekly hours before accepting an offer and ask direct questions at the open webinars if a page reads as vague.
