The first thing tutors look for is a realistic study plan. "Tell us when you will actually do the work," the guidance says. "'Evenings and Sunday mornings, about twelve hours a week' is a stronger sentence than three paragraphs about passion."

The second is a clear reason for this programme now. For taught master's and the MBA, that usually means a specific problem or goal. For doctorates, a research outline. For undergraduate returners, a concrete purpose. "We are not looking for the most impressive applicant," the guidance says. "We are looking for the applicant who will finish."

The third is honest evidence: transcripts where available, a short account of current work, and — where formal qualifications are thin — a case for recognition of prior learning or professional experience. Gaps are fine if they are explained.

What does not help: inflated language, undeclared use of generative tools to write the statement, and claimed experience that does not match the rest of the file. Tutors interview by video where a file is unclear, and a statement that does not sound like the applicant is a reason to call.

Naledi Dube, now an MBA graduate, said her successful application was three short paragraphs. "I named the reporting problem I wanted to fix, said when I would study, and attached my transcript. That was it."

Offers are issued as files are read. Applicants who need documents can save a draft and return. The application is at /apply, and every intake has open webinars where tutors answer questions before people submit.

Staff across admissions, registry, teaching and student services are told to design every process as if the default student is studying after a full day's work: recorded sessions, published rubrics, named advisers, and a library desk that does not close at the end of one country's office hours. Applicants should plan their weekly hours before accepting an offer and ask direct questions at the open webinars if a page reads as vague.
