Ministries across Africa ask nurses to upskill without leaving the ward. This mixed-methods study follows 148 registered nurses enrolled on AFU health-management master’s pathways while working night rotas in district hospitals. Completion at 18 months was 71% where students had a named academic adviser who answered within 24 hours and recorded seminars under 18 minutes. Completion fell to 39% where live sessions were scheduled only on Greenwich time. The decisive barrier was not academic ability. It was a clash between handover, generator hours and an assessment portal that timed out on 2G. The University of Edinburgh should treat bandwidth-aware design as a clinical-education duty. We propose a ‘ward-safe’ study week: three short recordings, one asynchronous clinic, and a submission window that spans two duty cycles. Ministries that bond nurses to rural posts should count supervised digital study as continuing professional development, not as absence.
